Coach Gerardo Torres
Coach Gerardo Torres grew up near the Bronx, New York. He is of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent, and is tri-lingual (English, Spanish, and Portuguese). He spent his time playing baseball, playing all the way through the varsity level as a catcher. He also coached and worked with young baseball players in instructional camps and intramural leagues. When presented with the opportunity to play at the college level, he decided to instead serve his country and enlist into the United States Marine Corps.
After serving in the U.S. Marines, he decided to pursue his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, specializing in Sports and Fitness Sciences. He is entering his senior year at Florida International University and intends on becoming a full time physical education instructor within the next year. Coach Torres is CPR/AED certified through the American Heart Association, and also holds a certification in Personal Training from the National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF).
Coach Torres is entering his 3rd year working in education. He began his career as a substitute teacher for Mater Academy in Little Havana, where he fell in love with the profession of teaching. Coach Torres is entering his 2nd year here at SASH. He works closely with the Athletics department and will also be assisting the Social Studies department in an instructional support role while he finishes his Bachelor’s Degree. Coach Torres is also the Head Coach of the Varsity Baseball team. He is looking forward to another great year here at Somerset Academy South Homestead! Go CANES!
