Mrs. Carla Carmona
Mrs. Carla Carmona is currently the science department head for Somerset Academy South Homestead. She is starting her second year at Somerset and has almost 10 years of classroom teaching experience in the field of life science such as regular, honors and AP level biology, marine science and environmental science.
Mrs. Carmona loves to teach using a variety of hands-on methods to help prepare her students for state assessments without teaching to a test. Her philosophy is that science is in everything so she wants her students to take the science inquiry taught in her classes and apply it to their every day lives.
Mrs. Carmona has a B.S. in biology and marine science from the University of Miami. Formerly, she worked as an interpretive naturalist for Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation and a Partnership Coordinator for for the youth programs at Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. It was through these jobs that she solidified her love for environmental education, all things biology, and the outdoors. She is a certified kayak, canoe and stand-up paddle board instructor through the American Canoe Association as well as a level 2 certified archery instructor through USA Archery.
Mrs. Carmona hopes to give her students the opportunity to get outside of the classroom and take the knowledge they have gained through her classes and apply it to whatever paths they choose to take in the future.
